Today, we feature Neriane Pinho Querino, an inspiring figure in the field of health sciences. Originally from Brazil, Neriane’s passion for nursing led her to pursue a career that transcends borders. Her journey took her to Spain, where she overcame language barriers and cultural adjustments to establish herself as a respected nurse and educator.
Neriane’s academic achievements include a degree from the University of Cádiz and two Master’s degrees, one in Nursing Research and Advanced Professional Practice and another in Emergencies. These qualifications, combined with her unwavering dedication, have equipped her with the skills necessary to provide high-quality care and contribute to the advancement of her field.
With a rich background that blends theoretical knowledge and practical experience, Neriane has become a prominent role model for women in STEM. She continues to inspire others by demonstrating that determination and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. Let’s explore how Neriane has navigated her career, from a dedicated student to a passionate professional making a difference in healthcare.
Can you describe your journey from school to where you are now (professionally/academically)?
I completed my basic education (primary-secondary) in Brazil. After finishing, I moved to Spain to take the university entrance exam. Initially, it was challenging due to the language barrier, which required a lot of perseverance and dedication. I studied for four years at the University of Cádiz (Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy). After graduating, I completed a Master’s in Nursing Research and Advanced Professional Practice (Nurse Practitioner).
While I felt academically prepared, I initially felt somewhat unprepared professionally, which is a common experience. The initial insecurity of a new profession can be either inspiring or frustrating. For me, it was the beginning of something transformative; I felt that this was my path. After a few years, I completed another Master’s in Emergencies and continue to develop professionally every day.
What motivated you to enter STEM? Did you have a female role model or someone who inspired you? If so, who?
Today, women need to be independent and capable of performing any function and being in control of their own destiny. My motivation came from my upbringing, my parents, and my uncles.
In my family environment, everything was always possible. My mother, my inspiration, always raised me to be strong and determined. Her words helped me become the resilient woman I am today. It is important to look up to a great woman to be sure that we can achieve our goals. Obstacles will always exist, and it is up to us to overcome each one to reach our dreamed destination.
What is your most significant professional/academic achievement?
My Master’s studies helped me see my profession from a different perspective. The Nurse Practitioner Master’s made me more autonomous as a nurse, and the Emergencies Master’s gave me more confidence in my daily practices. Professionally, I feel accomplished, loved, and appreciated. I cannot choose one specific achievement, as all are part of the nurse I am today.
Have you faced any challenges along your professional/academic journey? How did you overcome them?
Nursing is a profession with daily challenges. Academically, I would say the language barrier at the
beginning of university. Professionally, balancing being a woman and a mother, the famous family-work balance, is the most significant challenge in my daily life.
In your opinion, what needs to be done to attract more women and girls to STEM?
There needs to be more information in academic settings, showcasing women who have been and are great STEM professionals. They need to know that they can conquer any space in society. Today, women can care for their families and work outside the home. It is also crucial for them to understand that no profession is exclusively male; there will always be a place for them in any professional field.
What advice would you give to those seeking a career in STEM (or those who are not considering it)?
Be determined and persistent. Pursue what truly makes you happy. Study, learn languages, and do not stop until you achieve your goals.
